And they've been doing it in Rochester for 39 years.

Long before modern full-suspension mountain bikes, e-bikes, flow trails, or today's Vermont cycling scene, Green Mountain Bikes was already here.

The shop's historical archive traces its early years to a small shop on School Street from 1987 to 1989.

A lot has changed since then.

The basic idea hasn't.

Before Rochester Was a Mountain-Bike Destination

Think about mountain biking nearly four decades ago.

No modern disc brakes.

No sophisticated suspension systems.

No e-mountain bikes.

And certainly no statewide Velomont Trail.

People simply got on bikes and rode.

Green Mountain Bikes grew out of that era, and its history has followed the evolution of mountain biking itself.

Today, you'll find the shop at 105 North Main Street along Route 100 in Rochester.

But what makes the business interesting isn't simply what's hanging on the walls.

Over the years, the trail system surrounding Rochester changed dramatically.

Local trail organizers, including Ridgeline Outdoor Collective, have helped build an extensive network around town.

Green Mountain Bikes affectionately calls the result "RAW-chester — the Kingdom of Flow."

Trails and routes around Rochester now attract mountain bikers, gravel riders, bikepackers, hikers, and skiers.

The developing Velomont Trail adds another layer, with its Heart of the Greens Loop creating a multi-day backcountry riding experience through this part of Vermont.

That means Green Mountain Bikes isn't simply located in Rochester.

It's sitting in the middle of the experience.

Founder Doon Hinderyckx's son, Zak Hinderyckx, became a custom bicycle designer and builder.

During Green Mountain Bikes' 25th anniversary celebration, custom road and mountain bikes built by Zak were featured as part of a bicycle-themed exhibition at Rochester's BigTown Gallery.

That's the kind of detail that makes this more than a retail story.

Bicycles became part of the family's story, too.
